Nyx is a man of loyalty. When he was saved as a young man by King Regis he dedicated his life to the Kingsglaive in repayment. He is willing to fight for not only his home country of Galahd but for the hopes of the people of Insomnia, a city that has hardly been as welcoming as it should have been towards the foreign Glaive. He is willing to stand by his King even when Regis speaks of a peace treaty with the same Empire that ravaged Nyx's home.
Not only to those living does he stand loyal to but also to those who have passed. He carries the memory of his sister, who's death he considers his greatest failure. While he initially clings to the past it is her words and Lunafreya's reminder of them that propels him forward into shaping a future he hoped for and one his sister had hoped he would see.
Friends are family to him, as shown with his connection to Libertus and Crowe. He treats them as siblings and protects them with his life. His selfless actions for not just the two of them but for every Glaive has branded him the moniker of hero and left a foul taste in the mouth of those who view it as arrogance. Nyx is confident of his abilities, bordering a playful cockiness when speaking of his 'hero status' with friends.
He has good humor in that regard, responding to situations with a dry wit and the put-upon sarcasm of someone who's learned to deal with things through levity and a good amount of snark. Considering the amount of general negativity that's followed him through his life what with the burning of his village and Nifleheim actively trying to destroy everything else he's managed to gain.
His selflessness extends beyond a dedication to doing what is right and giving everything of himself. He has an underlying expectation of others acting in selfless manners as well, going as far as to question Regis when it is revealed the treaty signing and subsequent fall of Insomnia were to protect Noctis. He questions why so many Lucis sons should die for the sake of one but the reminder from Lunafreya and Regis that the pains of these lost lives will lead to a brighter future blunts the anger.
Nyx is not a fool. He is stoic and thoughtful, taking a quieter role among the people he spends the most time with. As shown when they mourn the loss of Crowe, Nyx takes the time to listen and not make snap decisions when the stakes are high. He shows a patient understanding as he lets Libertus voice his grief though keeps his own control for the sake of his duty and the needs of the kingdom. Though he doesn't agree with Libertus's ultimate decision he respects his friend enough to allow him his anger and grief without justifying the actions that he doesn't fully understand himself.
That isn't to say he doesn't feel a good sense of rightfully placed anger. Insults to his home or situations he finds less than agreeable can bring it to the surface. From the various conversations seen from Libertus, Crowe, and Lunafreya to even the Kings of old, he is shown not to mince words. A politician he is not, choosing honesty and blunt words to get his point across. He doesn't hide behind masks or presents himself as anything other than what he is. He is a soldier and he speaks only when he can fully back his words and accept the responsibility for them.
The loss of his sister had the longest impact on Nyx's life. He is trapped in the past in that he views himself as ultimately expendable. It is seen in his sparse lifestyle at home. The items of sentimentality that he carries are photos of his family and Galahd, as well as article clippings of the fall of his home and the worsening war. All still reflecting his failures back at him, coarse reminders that his life is forfeit for the sake of the future his sister wished for.
He tells Lunafreya of her, showing the grief he feels at not being able to show her the future she so wished to see, which is the same future that Crowe died trying to create. Lunafreya's words that his sister would feel the same way shows his lack of self-care so to speak. He is not a man who views himself as someone deserving of that future he's creating due to being unable to save the life of someone he held so dear.
In the end, he is willing to challenge the kings of old. He questions their decision to stand aside and not protect the city they ruled over. When told to choose between Libertus or Lunafreya is refuses, going as far to say he didn't need their power. He only wished to tell them they were no kings. He bears the pains given to him and demands action for the sake of a future he knows he will not see. He shows an ultimate understanding that this future is far more important than the life of one man and that sacrifices are necessary.
To sacrifice the life of another is unacceptable to him. While he knows that others value his life and that he too can see the importance of it he also understands that the actions of one person have the potential to forge a new dawn. Quite literally in some cases. If it is an action that requires the loss of a life then he is willing to put his own forward. In a full circle, his loyalty to those who saved his life is repaid by giving up that same life for the sake of others.
Original Portion
1 - Dedicated
Nyx's dedication is reflected in the initial loyalty he held towards Insomnia for his life being saved by Regis. He stands by his fellow Glaives and the decisions of the King even when he was shown to not wholly agree with certain actions taken by aforementioned King. From loyalty grew a fierce dedication to further the hopes of his fallen King and to secure a path to the future for those left behind.
2 - Selfless
The simplest way to put it. Nyx is willing to sacrifice his very life if it means saving the lives of others, whether it be a life long friend or someone recently placed in his care. He is quick to save comrades and quicker to put himself into the line of fire if it means someone else may have an easier time of it. Unfortunately, this has often come off as arrogance what with others assuming he is simply showing off and trying to be the hero of every situation.
3 - Crisp
No, not like that. While Nyx can joke with the best of them and carry deeper conversations with ease he prefers a more pragmatic approach to serious topics. Mincing words are for politicians and gossips and Nyx has no time for the back and forth that comes with making a decision. Decisive in his words and quick to action, he wastes little time on the internal debate when it comes to getting things done. He follows instinct and wastes no time with wasted words.
4 - Utilitarian
Despite Nyx's friendships to other Glaives, Libertus and Crowe especially, he is a solitary man. He lives alone and keeps his space free of other people as well as pointless items. He keeps things from home for purely sentimental purposes but his possessions are otherwise sparse. He wears his culture on his uniform and skin but has little else in his home that screams overt sentimentality for the land he left. Hell, his home doesn't even scream that he is anything more than a squatter in the space. He is a man of needs and not so much of wants, finding pleasure in the world around him and less in the things he collects from it.
5 - Impulsive
Nyx's quickness to actions at times translates to a lack of forethought. He questions Regis on his decision to sacrifice Insomnia for the sake of one person, son or no and is willing to be disagreeable on the subject. It doesn't matter if they're being chased down by a large angry soldier that just took out the shield of the king with a well-thrown sword and a conveniently placed indoor balcony Nyx wants to know why. It shows a lack of trust as well in the decisions of others if he doesn't carry enough information to feel it is justified.
6 - Self-Depreciation
Despite a resume of selfless acts and military victories Nyx views himself as a cog in a larger machine. To give all of himself is part of the job he signed on for. A low opinion of his worth stems from his past failures in saving his sister. To him, his life is a low form of currency, even if it's the only thing he has left to give by the end of it. His understanding of Lunafreya's larger part and Libertus's potential moving forward is enough to view his life as less important in the greater scheme.
